Missouri’s history of vineyards and wine making dates to the 1830s. Prior to the Prohibition years (1920-1933), Missouri was the largest wine producing state in America. In 1980, the area surrounding Augusta became the first federally designated American Viticultural Area (AVA). More recently, three additional AVAs have been designated: the regions around Hermann; the southwest Missouri Ozark Mountains and Highlands; and the south central district around St. James. Today, Missouri’s wine industry prospers with more than 96 wineries dotted across the state, and the list is growing. Stone Hill Winery, in Hermann, is the third most award winning winery in America. A visit to a Missouri winery affords the public a chance to sample a variety of estate bottled wines; enjoy a picnic; listen to live music; and relax in the countryside. For a map and information on all Missouri wineries, visit the Missouri Wine and Grape Board’s Web site: www.MissouriWine.org.
