Wood Hat Spirits distillery and tasting room is conveniently located on the north service road of I-70 at Exit 175 (.5 miles east of Route 19), next to the Curling Vine wine tasting room.
Wood Hat Spirits is one of the few distilleries in the nation to use Hopi blue corn, which they use to make their award-winning Aged Blue Corn Whiskey, the unique Bourbon Rubenesque and All American Red, White and Blue Corn Whiskey. Adding to the products made from heirloom corns, is the barrel-strength Bloody Butcher Red. The latest addition to their line of products made with locally grown heirloom corns is Bloody Dapper, a red corn, wheated bourbon.
To round out this extensive line of bourbons and corn whiskeys is the first batch of Missouri Bourbon in the form of Montgomery County Missouri Straight Bourbon.
For those preferring a sweeter taste, Berry Berry Cordial (a maceration of locally grown blackberries and raspberries) is offered along with a version that has rested in a used whiskey barrel, known as Tawny Berry. Other liqueurs include the sumptuous Black Walnut Liqueur, an adaptation of Noccino that transforms Missouri-grown black walnuts into a spicy after dinner drink, and Persimmon Cordial, made from wild persimmons.
Wood Hat Spirits’ unique wood-fired still had its debut run in July 2013 and is the creation of “retired” agronomist and businessman, Gary Hinegardner, who spent several years exploring the distilling craft. He is also a wood turner, hence the name, Wood Hat Spirits. He turns wood hats which are on display in the tasting room along with those of his teacher, JoHannes Michelson.
