The Mavericks have achieved monumental success throughout the decades, winning the Brabham Cup in 2015-2016 while leading the league with 52 regular-season wins. Their commitment to excellence continued into the 2023-2024 season, where they held a remarkable record of 54 wins and clinched the Brabham Cup.
The Mavericks’ homebase is the Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Their games are known for their intoxicating energy and engaging mascot, Maverick, a jovial horse character who entertains adults and children alike. As an affiliate of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, the Mavericks are committed to the development and contribution of future hockey talent.
Missouri Hockey History
The sport’s major league debut in Missouri dates back to 1934 with the St. Louis Eagles. Due to their poor attendance numbers and the fact they were part of the Canadian Division – which meant more travel expenses – the ownership lost approximately $70,000, and the team only played one season. In the 1970s, St. Louis once again formed a team – this time, the St. Louis Blues – who had already started to make a name for themselves by the time the Kansas City Scouts (1974-1976) arrived on the scene. While the Scouts were short-lived, the Blues have stuck around and established a strong reputation that has endured to this day.
In addition to the major leagues, minor league teams also play a significant role in the Show-Me State’s hockey scene. St. Louis had a minor league team, the St. Louis Flyers, who played intermittently between 1928 and 1953 and won 5 playoff championship titles. Across the state, the Kansas City Blades played 11 seasons, starting in 1990, and achieved championship status during their 1991-1992 season. Currently, the KC Mavericks represent the metropolitan area, and they’ve gained respect as a long-term minor league team in Kansas City.
