This monument was erected in tribute to Old Drum, the beloved hunting dog who was shot by his owner’s neighbor in 1869. George Graham Vest, who later became a U.S. Senator, won world fame for his closing argument, from which the phrase “a dog is a man’s best friend” is said to have come.
