U.S. Highway 61 runs through Pike County in Northeast Missouri. The eastern border of the county is the Mississippi River with the river towns of Louisiana and Clarksville offering tourism and outdoor recreation.
Bowling Green is the county’s government seat with attractions including a chocolate factory, antique stores, historic home and museum, fishing lakes, campground, Old Jail Museum, world-renowned smoked meats producer, and an Amish community featuring handcrafted woodworking and baked goods.
Louisiana offers a walking tour of many historic homes, including one owned by Missouri’s former governor, Lloyd C. Stark. The Stark Nursery is renowned for selling fruit trees to the world. Visit the downtown History Museum or the Riverview Cemetery sitting high on a bluff overlooking the river.
At Clarksville you can “Touch the Mississippi” from the Terracing Steps at the Riverside Park or visit the many working artisans shops in town. Tour the Victorian Elgin/Cottrell House. Many fine dining and B&B experiences are available in the county. Clarksville provides great opportunities to view river life from observation scopes at the Visitor Center and at the Lock and Dam 24.
