Established in the late 19th century, the cemetery rests on the homestead of Saint Leger Brown, a Methodist minister who had been enslaved. It is one of only a few burial grounds established for the Black Community in Howell County. Some of the graves are marked, but others are not. A research project in partnership with Missouri State University is currently underway to identify unmarked graves.
