This park commemorates the deadly forced removal of the Cherokee people, part of the larger Trail of Tears. Nine Cherokee detachments being forcibly relocated to Oklahoma crossed the Mississippi River here during the winter of 1838-39. Exhibits inside the park’s visitor center interpret this tragedy, as well as the park’s natural features.
The park offers a variety of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, swimming and picnicking. An accessible overlook provides a sweeping view of the Mississippi River.
The visitor center’s hours vary throughout the year; check the website for details.
